Before 1914, there were 772 inhabitants in Montfaucon d 'Argonne. The village was on a high hill between the Argonne forest and the Meuse. The height and location of Montfaucon made it a strategic point.
From second September 1914, Montfaucon was an occupied German area. On the 27th September 1918, the village was liberated by American troops, and moved on to reach Stenay and Sedan on the 10th of November. A day later, at 11.00 am, the Great War came to an end. At the beginning of 1919, the first Montfaucon residents returned but found their village destroyed. They then decided to rebuild the village at the foot of the hill. Next to our bed and breakfast, you can still see a shed of that time.
On this hill, a piece of land was given to the Americans, who later built a Memorial Tower. You can climb the tower all the way and enjoy a breath-taking view. In and around Montfaucon, you can see various remains of the Great War. Verdun is only 30 km away but this region has much more to offer :
We can not include everything on our website, but at least this gives you an idea of what you can expect.
